NMCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Welcomes New Members During Fall Induction Ceremony

Northern Maine Community College’s Alpha Phi Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) held its Fall Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, October 29, welcoming a new group of high-achieving students into the distinguished international honor society. The ceremony, held on the NMCC campus, celebrated the academic accomplishments of its new members, reinforcing PTK’s mission to recognize and encourage scholarly excellence among students attending two-year colleges.

Robert Carlson, PTK Advisor at NMCC, officially welcomed the inductees, while keynote speaker Shawn Lahey, Programming Supervisor at MMG Insurance and a graduate of NMCC, shared insights on the value of academic excellence and service. Lahey’s address emphasized the importance of leadership and personal growth within the educational community and encouraged students to continue their dedication to their studies and community.

This fall’s new inductees include Vincent Booker, Kemanie Cato, Sarah DeMerchant, Shauna Johnson, Melissa Langille, Maxwell Lister, Jonathan Lovewell, Gilberto Mabjaia, Tonya McLennan, Donah Rafford, Joshua Scheff, Kalala Tshabu, and Haleigh York.

Founded in 1918 by presidents of two-year colleges in Missouri, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is committed to acknowledging and promoting the academic success of community college students. The Society provides extensive opportunities for members to pursue growth through honors, leadership, and service programs. Recognized in 1929 by the American Association of Community Colleges as the official honor society for two-year colleges, Phi Theta Kappa has since grown into the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than 1.3 million members across 1,100 chapters in the United States, U.S. territories, Canada, Germany, and Japan.

To qualify for PTK membership, students must meet rigorous academic standards, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher while completing at least 12 credit hours of coursework applicable to a two-year degree. As members of PTK, students are encouraged to further their academic and professional achievements through the society’s four pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship.

The induction ceremony at NMCC’s Alpha Phi Epsilon Chapter recognizes the achievements of students who exemplify dedication to their studies and community service. Each new member embarks on a journey aimed at academic excellence, with opportunities to enhance their skills, serve their communities, and build a foundation for future success.
